Initiative Filed to Overturn Oxnard Wastewater Rate Increases

Thanks to the support of so many of you, we have decided to take steps to overturn the sewer rate increases that are scheduled to increase a typical family's utility bill by $326 per year.

As reported in the Ventura County Star:

"Now, Starr is moving ahead after filing papers with the city clerk for a possible November ballot initiative.

The intent notice filed March 8 is the first step to launch a signature drive. The city has until midweek to draft a title and short summary, Starr said, which he will have legal advisers look over before getting printed. He will need to collect 1,430 valid signatures from Oxnard voters by about May 20 to get the initiative on the ballot, he said.

Starr, who founded the group Moving Oxnard Forward, mounted an unusual, privately funded opposition campaign against the city's utility rate hikes that included mailers with protest cards, professional banners and a plea for residents to turn out in force to the City Council's January hearing. The effort brought more than 400 people, possibly a record crowd. The council initially approved water, wastewater and trash rate hikes but in a surprise move the following week OK'd only the wastewater increases."
